Loratadine allergy tablets are used to effectively treat the symptoms of hay fever and other allergic reactions, such as a runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing.

Loratadine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines, which block the substance known as histamines. Histamines are produced by the body when triggered by certain allergens and create the allergic reaction.

Summer can be an enjoyable time for most but for those who suffer from hay fever, it can be considerably less so. By blocking the histamine in the body, Loratadine prevents allergy symptoms and allows you to enjoy daily life to the fullest.

Always follow the guidance given in the enclosed patient information leaflet and be sure to read it before commencing use of the medicine.

Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water, with or without food.

The recommended dose of Loratadine one tablet once a day for adults and children aged over 12. This medicine can be taken by children under 12 but they should weigh at least 30kg and the dose will be one tablet once every other day. If the child weighs under 30kg then a more suitable medication (like an oral suspension) should be considered.

If you take more Loratadine than you should then contact your doctor immediately and do not drive in the meantime. If you forget a dose then take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s nearly time for your next dose. Do not take two tablets at once; if it’s nearly time for the next dose then simply skip the forgotten one.

Before taking this medication, you should always first check that it is suitable for you and any of your associated medical conditions. Do not take Loratadine if:

  • you are allergic (hypersensitive) to loratadine or any of the other ingredients
  • the patient is a child under two years of age

Because of the way that medications interact with each other, you should talk to a doctor before taking Loratadine if you are already taking any other medications, particularly those for epilepsy, anxiety or sleep.

Talk to a doctor before using Loratadine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have any existing medical conditions (such as kidney or liver disease).

The most common side effects of Loratadine are:

  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Increased appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping.

You should cease using Loratadine immediately and contact your doctor if you experience any serious side effects or if you notice signs of an allergic reaction.
