What is Soolantra Cream used for?

Soolantra cream is a topical anti-inflammatory cream used to treat rosacea.

The cream contains the active ingredient ivermectin, which helps to reduce the redness and inflammation associated with rosacea.

Ivermectin is an anthelmintic (vermicide) which is used to kill parasites that live on the skin.

It is believed rosacea is caused by a parasite called demodex mites. These mites live in and around follicles in the skin and feed on the sebum. When they die, they release bacteria which irritate the skin and cause inflammation.

If you are unsure whether your condition is caused by a parasitic mite, fungal infection, or bacteria, speak to your doctor. Depending on the cause of your skin condition, you may need a more appropriate treatment. For example, an antifungal such as fluzonazole may be more appropriate for a fungal skin condition than a bacterial skin condition.

How do you use Soolantra?

Soolantra should only be applied to skin on the face, avoiding the eyes and mouth. The standard dosage is one application per day, for anything up to four months.

The directions for use are as follows:

  1. Apply a pea-sized amount of ivermectin cream to each of the affected areas
  2. Spread the ointment as a thin layer across the face, avoiding the eyelids and lips
  3. Wash hands after application
  4. Wait for it to dry before applying other creams or makeup
  5. The best time to apply Soolantra or any prescription rosacea medication is either morning or night; just aim to keep it relatively consistent.

Note: Soolantra cream is a topical treatment and not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use.

How Does Soolantra Work?

Ivermectin is the active ingredient in Soolantra. This is an anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic compound. In Soolantra, this is present at a concentration of 1%.

The actual cause of rosacea is unknown, but there seems to be a common feature among patients with the condition. Generally, there are abnormalities with their immune systems, leading to an overproduction of inflammatory mediators.

Additionally, patients with rosacea often have increased numbers of Demodex mites in the afflicted areas. Ivermectin can successfully kill these mites and reduce the inflammation, helping to treat rosacea.
