What Is Zomig?
Zomig is a prescription medication used in the treatment of migraine headaches. It is part of a group of medications called triptans which are used to reverse certain changes in the brain that are thought to trigger migraine attacks. The drug can be used to treat headaches with or without aura (blind spots, flashing lights, zigzag patterns in your field of vision) and it can tackle other symptoms, including sensitivity to light and noise, nausea and vomiting. It contains the active ingredient zolmitriptan.
How does Zomig Work?
Zomig works by reducing the swelling of blood vessels around the brain that are thought to cause migraines. It can also block natural substances produced in the brain that can trigger head pain, as well as other migraine symptoms, such as nausea and sensitivity to sound and light.
However, bear in mind that the medication only works when a migraine has already started. It can not be used to prevent future attacks or reduce the number of attacks you have.
What is a Migraine?
Migraines are intense, sometimes debilitating headaches. The most common types of migraine are those with aura (classical migraines) and those without aura (common migraines).
Zomig may cause some temporary side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, drowsiness, weakness and heaviness or tightness around the chest or neck. Although very rare, there are also some more serious side effects associated with the medication. A complete list of potential side effects can be found in the patient information leaflet that comes with your prescription.
